My latest work

I recently completed an illustration of the Brooklyn Bridge. The end client is a construction and infrastructure company and it will be used as the header image of their calendar for next year. The final image was 26" long, but not so tall, so it's a hard format to show, but here is a detailed section of it. As you can see, it ended up being very detailed and I had a deadline I was working to hit, but it all worked out. The illustration was painted from scratch in Photoshop and took just over a week of full-time work to complete.

You can see a full-length version of the image on my portfolio site here.

  1. Dan- this is soo great!! I loved learning about how you approached this initially. You showed us the areas that posed the greatest challenge to you, the massive cityscape in the background, but despite the overwhelming scale you nailed it!
I'd love to see more on the making of it in a tutorial!
I really appreciated all of your help and expertise this semester at Academy of Art. It was a real honor to learn from you!

  2. Excellent rendering Dan and great attention to detail, right down to the maintenance platform under the bridge. I don't mean to be picky but 1 Should there be a little more room above the main buttress? 2 Should you have cut off the top of the flag? 3 Is the buttress straight or is that an illusion? 4 Some of the buildings don't look straight or is that an illusion caused by the curve of the bridge? 5 The background buildings are a different style than the bridge. They have a painterly effect while the bridge looks real. Again, I'm sorry to be so picky but you asked.

  3. I think you should have some organic objekts in the forground like a rock or a bush. I think it would make look more alive. great work by the way.

  4. All fine comments and I appreciate them. As far as room above the near tower, that is a compositional issue. The size I was given was 26"x5.5", so I couldn't do much about that, but I would like to have more, so that it would be easier to show in other formats. All the vertical lines (buttress, buildings) are perfectly straight, so there is no vertical perspective. As far as the background buildings, I didn't try to make them a different style. The bridge itself turned out more realistic than I have planned. I'm okay with the buildings because they are only a background element, but I was running short on time by that point. Some organic objects would have been nice, but the client was touting their work on the bridge and that's really all they wanted in the image. As commercial artists, we always have to please the client.
